The Top Banana

In vaudeville, the top comedy act was once known as the top banana. According to Daniel Cassidy, phoney linguist and self-appointed ‘expert’ on Irish, this has nothing to do with bananas. No, banana in this case is the Irish baothán nathánach, which (he says) means ‘a witty simpleton’ or ‘a fool fond of adages’. I really can’t be bothered refuting this because it is JUST SO COMPLETELY STUPID. Sometimes, a banana is just a banana. And sometimes someone who pretends to be a scholar is just bananas.
