No, banana in this case is the Irish baothán nathánach, which (he says) means ‘a witty simpleton’ or ‘a fool fond of adages’. I really can’t be bothered refuting this because it is JUST SO COMPLETELY STUPID. Sometimes, a banana is just a banana. And sometimes someone who pretends to be a scholar is just bananas.
